Randy Tico has gained a solid reputation as an inventive and versatile bassist and composer. His recent forays into film scoring include Steal Big, Steal Little directed by Andrew Davis (The Fugitive), Joe’s Gyro Palace, and The Housekeeper for FX Network’s Short Film Series, and episodes for the syndicated TV series Freddy’s Nightmares.
Working with director Nancy Keystone over the past 11 years, he has scored Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus, Aphra Behn’s The Rover, Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, as well as two large scale trans-cultural multi-media festival performance pieces for the Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Celebration Evening Event.
Tico has also been commissioned to compose original scores for Nevelson, Mary Cassatt Speaks, and Of Lies and Truth: Artemesia Gentileschi, Woman Painter, all written and performed by Helena Hale. Additionally, Tico served as musical director for the celebrated Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Parade in 1988 and 1989. Tico began assembling large scale multi-media projects for the annual Santa Barbara Arts Festivals in the early 80’s. “Soundscapes,” involving music, multiple-projector visuals and dance, resulted in an album release on Inner Circle Records, with Tico at the helm as performer, composer and producer.
In 1990, Higher Octave Music released his album “Earth Dance.” He has toured the globe and recorded numerous albums with the acclaimed Brazilian duo, Flora Purim and Airto. He has also toured and recorded with the guitar duo, Strunz and Farah, as well as John McEuen, Scott Cossu and many others. His involvement with the band, Matrix in the 70’s included national tours, recordings and particular notice for his distinctive, melodic bass style, incorporating unusual techniques with harmonics which became the cornerstone of the Matrix sound. Tico has branched out recently, doing educational tours in Europe with Efrian Toro and Rique Pantoja and an increasing number of studio dates for film (Say Anything, Captain Ron, Mystery Date) and recording artists such as Sadao Wantanabe, Henry Butler, Ivan Lins, and Willie & Lobo.
